Rear garden makeover Georgian close, Drogheda co.Louth

Contemporary styled low maintenance styled garden with block paving, curved lawn and raised timber sleeper vegetable and flower beds.

Visually unappealing  garden
This garden in Georgian close Drogheda co. Louth had a plain and unappealing prescience. Its awkward changes in level and hard concrete surfaces and overall layout made the garden difficult to negotiate and had little design aesthetic. It was though a large family garden space and which had bags of potential. The house had been converted to gas so there was also no need for the existing  unsightly oil tank and boiler house which could be removed to make extra visual space in the garden and room for a large raised flower bed.

Awkward stepped and hard concrete paving

Existing family garden
Our clients wanted a family  garden space without the change in levels and  existing trip hazard flags and edges. This was replaced with Tobermore's shannon heather brick paving which was grouted and sealed to prevent weeds growing in the joints and to protect the colour of the bricks form the elements.
They also wanted raised beds that could be worked at from a comfortable standing height without the need for bending over.

Garden design
We created a plan that would make best use of the space with large lawn for children to play on and balance the necessary paths to the utility room  and clothes line and new flower beds. We created raised beds 1.72 m high which are also particularly good for people who suffer with back problems and planted them with a mixture of low maintenance cottage perennials and small shrubs. One large kitchen bed filled with herbs and some runner beans was positioned near the rear kitchen doors.Linear drains were placed along the rear of the house to protect the damp proof coursing.

The lawn was re-turfed with roll out grass with a mowing edge where the mower could run directly over the paving to leave a clean and crisp finish to the lawn and paving edging. The transformation and new spirit of the garden brought a new dimension to the garden.
