Unkempt and sometimes unruly garden

This garden in Kells co.Meath belonged to a young couple. Their garden was on a slope and was difficult for them to maintain as the lawn they inherited was in poor condition. The oil tank was an eyesore and overall the garden which was their largest room had no character or patio for them to enjoy sitting outdoors with their friends.
Their budget was limited but they wished to have some shape and design put into their garden and which they could enjoy.
We decided that for their budget of under 3000 euros we could create a beautiful contempory garden with patio area raised beds, low maintenance planting which would include some silver birch and rowan trees for screening and seasonal interest and an area where they could have a garden shed installed. Also i would over seed and feed their lawn to encourage it back to a manageable lawn with a brick edging surround to define the lawn and reduce on strimming. The results were pretty pleasing overall and shows that with experience and imagination garden makeovers can be designed to suit a range of budgets..

Poor state of conrete yard, cracking + breaking up

This concrete yard in Ballsgrove, Drogheda co.Louth was in a poor condition. The concrete had originally been laid some fifty years ago and was now tired and cracking up in places. The owner of the house was elderly and uncomfortable negotiating steps as well as tired of looking at the grey drab yard.
We decided to lay new affordable cracked ice patio slabs from Oldbridge concrete a local manufacturer of patio products.
We took out two steps, one into her conservatory and the other into her utility shed to make the use of her garden and out buildings more accessible.
The new slabs brightened up the whole yard while
also tied in nicely with the previous paving work we had done for her a few years previously with the same slabs..

Garden before with large cherry trees.

This garden in Five Oaks Drogheda co.Louth had two large cherry trees which were starting to damage the boundary wall as its roots were coming up underneath the foundations as can happen with certain cherry tree species which are over 20 yrs old. The overall look of the garden was beginning to neglected looking and a poor reflection on the frontage of their house.It was decided to remove the trees and create some new raised beds in there place and a new turf lawn could also be laid now. The lawn could now be graded better to reduce the existing slope which was quite steep. We did this by raising the lawn at the bottom of the lawn with decorative kerbs. A mowing edge was also laid around the lawn to negate the use of a strimmer and make lawn cutting easier with a tidier finish.
To the right hand side of the garden we created a second bed with decorative gravel as a mulch. To the rear left side we created a raised sleeper bed in an area which was previously neglected and dull looking. The plants used in the garden were a selection of hardy perrenials, delpiniums, lavender, grasses, heathers, agapanthus, astelia, pittosporum with spring bulbs such as crocus, miniature daffodils and grape hyacinth for seasonal colour.Also a small Japanese Maple tree (up to 3m tall when mature) was planted to replace the cherry trees which turn a fiery red/orange in autumn .

This garden in Raheny co.Dublin we recently completed lacked a distinct patio to enjoy the south facing aspect. It also was waterlogged at many times throughout the year.
Our client who was also a keen gardener wished to have a nice bright terrace and a retaining wall built that would complement her garden. The garden was on two levels and had a continuous flooding problem resolved.
We came up with the design of a large sandstone terrace 40 msq, with a retaining wall and stepping stones across the garden which would lead to a small patio which could be used as a mediation corner.
Linear drains connected to the storm drains would resolve the drainage problem while a new timber enclosure would conseal her wheelie bins.The results were particularly pleasing.

Our client for this garden in Balbriggan co.Dublin wanted to freshen up his garden and add some raised beds and new plantings with some new boundary treatment.. The front garden had a plain and open boundary that he wished to have replaced with a picket style fencing and raised beds that would be easy to maintain. The rear garden offered little in terms of soft plantings and the fencing was quite low 5ft and the timber post were beginning to rot. We replaced the timber post with concrete post and concrete panels which raised the fencing to 6ft and gave him more privacy and a much stronger and durable fence. Raised beds and a mixture of cottage perennials such as lavender, Russian sage, Iris, grasses and small shrubs among others would provide colour through out the year.

This is a low maintenance garden GreenArt Landscapes created in Balbriggan co.Dublin. The owner was a busy professional who wanted to make the most of his garden which up until now he barely used.
He wanted a garden with out grass which gave him more time to enjoy his free time and could be used all year round as the ground was particularly wet in winter. Not having any grass also meant that he didn't need a garden shed for storing lawnmowers and unused clutter.
I came up with a curvilinear design that took the square look off his garden. We put the sandstone patio in the centre of the garden to catch the most sunshine and it also became a central feature of the garden.
The timber seated pergola also made a good focal point within the garden while helping to screen the view of the houses behind.
A mixture of cottage perrenials such as agapanthus, delphiniums, lavender and grasses with two trees, a native mountain ash and Japanese maple would give seasonal colour throughout the year.

This is a front driveway which GreenArt Landscapes extended to fit a second car. The pillar was moved across and the wall cut back accordingly to widen the entrance.
An economical, long lasting and durable way of making extra space for a second car.
We created a low maintenance raised bed inside against the wall and added a selection of grasses such as Stipa gigantea, Calamagrostis, Carex, and cottage perrenials such as Agapanthus, lavender and Iris.

This garden pond in Duleek co.Meath was too dark and overpowering for the position in the garden. Also the slate stone had started to crack after the cold winter frosts. Its owners wanted a new pond as they enjoyed the soothing sound of the water flowing. Also they wanted more planting around the new pond to make it more balanced and soft.
I came up with a new design with three pools which would be connected and flow into each other via stream of water through cobbles and different sized stones. I used Donegal quartz gravel for the surrounds and large and small beach stones that were sourced form a dredging operation of a harbour. The plantings were a mixture of grasses and bamboo for height and flag iris, rockery perennials with a lavender hedge either side of the steps divided and edged with railway sleepers.

This garden in Inse Bay, Laytown co.Meath had a sandstone patio that had been laid previously with a fall of too steep a gradient. The garden lacked any real definition or colour in its plantings while the lawn was quite worn and uneven and sloping as well as being weed infested.
The clients wished to have decking installed where the patio was and also at the rear of their house so that they could follow the sun around the garden from morning to evening and make the best use of their garden for relaxation. They also wished to have their wheelie bins screened and a new larger shed fitted.

We installed the deck in two areas and along the rear of the house to mask the existing concrete path. Raised beds with seasonal flowering perrenials and a honey suckle scented climber for the rear wall would soften the garden and create interest and warmth throughout the year.
Timber Clementine panels were fitted to screen the wheelie bins which were also raised level with the decking.
A new turf lawn was laid with a brick mowing edge surrounding it to reduce the need for strimming edges. A couple of coats of decking oil would finish the garden and add warm natural cedar colour to the wood while aid in preserving the timber and keeping it clean.

Cold grey boundary walls in a garden Grange Rath, Drogheda

New rendered walls, trellis and raised bed.

This garden in Grange Rath, Drogheda had a cool and grey unattractive presence. It had no character or style about it and cried out to be re designed and planted to become a real garden.

We decided that the walls would be the first thing to receive attention. They would be rendered using white cement giving a bright clean contemporary look. Some trellis and a mixture of climbing roses, scented honeysuckle and scented jasmine would provide seasonal colour and fragrance as well as attracting beneficial insects such as our native bees.

The curved raised beds juxtaposed the straight lines of the boundary walls and united the rear of the garden and shed. This was created using a combination of kerbs for height and a brick mowing edge for ease of grass cutting ( no strimming or hairy edges against the raised beds).

The planting consisted of two silver bitch to provide some screening above the wall later on and a mixture of cottage perrenials and a Japanese maple for seasonal colour. a simple yet very effective to soften an unappealing rear wall.

This garden in Newfield, Drogheda had a great aspect facing south west but its owners hadn't any patio space to enjoy sitting outdoors. They wanted a patio with some designed character that would contrast the squareness of their garden and would look bright and atrractive throughout the year.

We decided on using a 3m Indian Sandstone circle for the centre piece and gold granite slabs for the surrounds with a brick dividing circumference to the edge of the circle.
The garden sloped towards the house so it was neccesary to step the edge of the patio with a small kerb that would run flush with lawn for the ease of grass cutting. As the patio would slope towards the house it was also necessary to install and a linear channel to carry the water away from the house and back door to the main drain at the back of the garden.

The finished patio of approximatively 23sqm had ample space now to enjoy sitting and eating outdoors and united the house with the garden and terrace.

This garden in Templeogue co.Dublin was crying out for a new makeover. The dark imprinted concrete hard surfaces and constricting fence offered little aesthetic beauty which made an average sized urban back garden look very small and uninviting.

The clients were busy hard working people who liked to enjoy sitting and eating outdoors when they had the free time. They had built a new conservatory but hadn't a nice view form it, or from their kitchen.

The concrete surfacing which was also chipping away offered little character and had become slippery when wet, while the garden became partially water logged after raining or washing down the hard areas particularly in winter. This was partly due to the large roof surface of the shed, where the gutters hadn't been connected to the storm drains and overflowed into the garden itself.
This we rectified while also installing a land drain to drain the lawn area.

For the new surfacing we chose calibrated Indian limestone paving which is cut to uniform 25mm thick stone slabs in three sizes which added more detail and colour to the paving area. This was edged with gold granite kerbs which were also used to define the the bed areas which were planted up with a mixture of cottage perennials and covered with Donegal quartz gravel which gives a pinkish hue when wet while also helping to retain moisture in the soil for the plants.Meaning less watering too.

The oil tank was screened with a bespoke screening of pressure treated timber batons mounted on a curving frame which suited the overall curvilinear design of the garden and made best use of the space to allow access to the shed while concealing two wheelie bins and the oil tank itself.

The pond was re- created to a curving rockery style with a contemporary cascading water effect which added a gentle sound to the garden. The pond surface was fitted with a galvanised steel safety frame (which doesn't rust) with an access door which could be stood upon when working at the rockery or pond.

The next project was to clad the shed building with ship-lap cedar boards which would soften the building and once oiled with linseed oil gives a warm colour to the timber.

This garden in Inse Bay Laytown co.Meath was very uneven and had a sharp slope towards the back wall of about a foot in depth.With its bare walls and lack of vegetation it was uninspiring and unused as an an outdoor room.
The clients were a young family with children and wanted an easy garden to look after that would have character and would be bright and inviting through out the year.
We decided that decking would be an option to combat the gradient of the garden while providing a nice place to sit at a table and chairs to enjoy the evening sun. Painting the walls and adding trellis and climbers would soften and add structure to the cold block walls.
A second decked area outside the patio doors would catch the morning sun and be a nice place to have coffee and read the paper in the mornings while also providing a beuatiful view that flowed outwards form within the dining area of the house. (Linking the house to the garden).
An Indian sandstone paved path links the two deck areas together while two raised sleeper beds with cottage perrenials will provide colour and balance to the decking. A brick edge around the lawn added detail to the lawn defining the lawn area while making it easy to cut with a mower while negating the need for strimming and edges.

The cold grey block wall

This Garden in Crumlin was in a poor state. Its previous owners had erected a timber fence which was quite loosly fitted and ready to fall down.The timber posts were rotting in the ground.

Also the lawn was mostly weeds such as creeping buttercup, dandelion and clover. While the existing raised beds were composed of log roll and the grey block wall was cold and uninspiring.

The new owner wished to have this rectified but was on a strict budget. We decided that replacing the fence with a conrete post and pressure treated timber shiplap panel was the first thing to do. This system allows for the simple replacing of the panels when they need to be in the future, while the concrete posts last a lifetime.

A new turf lawn and remodified raised beds using durable pressure treated sleepers would replace the decaying log roll. This was then planted with lavender which provide colour throughout the summer while they also provide food for bees and other beneficial insects.

We decided that reusing the decorative gravel would be a good option and placing new landscape weed supressent fabric underneath would be a far better solution than the previous option which was light black bags which wasnt standing the test of time at all. The block wall was painted a soft magnolia colour and trellis was fitted to the walls to add structure. These few simple changes brought a new freshness and structure to the garden

Raised sleeper beds for growing vegetables

These raised vegatable beds are ideal for growing a variety of edible fruit, veg and herbs. These beds are 2m X 3mX 100mm deep either side of a patio area using pressure treated new sleepers. 8 pressure treated new sleepers in total. The beds are rectangular in shape with a brick edging layed on mortar that goes all the way around the perimeter of the sleepers,this is though not fundamental it makes it easy to mow around the beds without strimming the grass which would grow against the sleepers in th lawn area.
I sprayed the grass first with a organicly friendly herbicideand hand treated also as there was a very bad weed in the lawn (horsetail).The beds were filled with good dry topsoil 1.5 tonnes. (screened soil can also be used or a mixed soil and compost which can be purchased in 1tonne units)
4 or 8 beds can also be created for crop rotation purposes. Fruiting bushes(currants,blackberries etc) need only to be moved every ten years.Perrenial herbs can be grown in the same place for 5yrs.
If you follow a crop rotation programme , a section which has leafy plants in the first year will be occupied by root plants in the second year. Potatoes will then follow in the third year and legumes in the fourth..

Good combinations:

Potatoes and horseradish- increase yield.
Beets and onions- encourage growth.
Lettuce and chervil- keep aphids away.
Leeks,carrots and salsify- prevents leek fly.
Tomatoes and african marigold- good against whitefly.
Cabbage and clover- helps keeps cabbage predators at bay.

This garden in Drogheda co.Louth had been looked after by a keen gardener in the past but had now become very overgrown and was pretty unmanageable to its elderly owner. It also had a large amount of scutch grass and perennials which had no boundaries. The owner wished to have a lawn and beds which would be easy to maintain and look good all year round. We decided on a design which would have good sized beds with a decorative gravel covering, which would be proportionate to the size of the lawn. At the edge of the lawn would be a path to make the trimming of the hedge much easier, as a base for a step ladder and for sweeping up the trimmings. The design i came up with was of an arc and tangent style with a brick

This garden in Terenure,Dublin had a large overgrown hedge which was becoming very difficult for the owners to maintain. They wished to have it removed along with an overgrown shrub in the center of there garden which was strangled by brambles. Also they recently had new french doors fitted to their sitting room and wanted to have a nice patio area to entertain there family and friends and enjoy the outdoors. As a condition though they wished to have the patio railed off so that their dog could be separated from the patio area and they could each have their own spaces. We created raised sleeper borders to replace the hedge and a Tobermore sandstone patio with brick detailing and raised country stone bed at the end of the garden.

This garden suffered from poor drainage throughout the year due to a shallow topsoil and compacted subsoil. In winter time it was difficult to walk out on the lawn and the clients dog would bring muck in to the house even in summer after light to moderate rainfall.
We installed a land drain system in February this year consisting of 75mm perforated pipe and drainage gravel connected to storm drains to take away excess water from the ground and encourage oxygen flow back into the soil.
We also landscaped the site creating easy maintained raised beds and trellis covered walls which transformed the garden.

This garden in Drogheda co.Louth was onriginally created on a steep gradient and the client wished to have a patio area that would be secluded from outside view. To do this it would need to be sunken by a foot from the original ground level. We dug this out with a micro digger as side access was narrow. A retaining wall was placed around the back and sides of the patio to retain the earth along the wall, hedge and building. It also became a nice feature surrounding the Indian sandstone circular patio. The slope of the lawn could now be reduced by using the good top soil dug out. Steps were created to access the patio and lawn creating a terraced effect. The finished garden including the timber pergola combined to create an interesting and usable garden with i think an influence of the ruins of Pompeii.

This garden created by GreenArt Landscapes was for a newly built house in Terenure. The clients wished to have a low maintenance back garden and a driveway and garden in the front. Also with a patio area to sit out as it received most sunshine in the front throughout the day and the garden in the rear was quite narrow. We chose to create a rectilinear styled low maintenance garden to maximise the space with gravel and camel dust Indian sandstone stepping stones and raised sleeper beds in the rear garden. In the front we chose a curvilinear style using Tobermore Shannon heather colour brick for the driveway which complemented the house beautifully and a 3m camel dust sandstone patio surrounded by gravel. The planting in the beds included multi-stemmed birch, Japanese loqout and a mixture of cottage perennials and heathers for seasonal interest. The design and implementation complements the house beautifully.

This rear garden in Five Oaks, Drogheda Co.Louth was on a steep gradient which was difficult for the owners to use and maintain and offered little as an outdoor room. The clients decided that he wished to have the garden on two levels with the lower level to be a patio area that could be used for outdoor dining/relaxing and a dry standing area to hang out their laundry. When i arrived they had already dug out the majority of the soil and had a good idea about how they wanted their garden to look. With our help we decided on the type and colour of the materials to be used. Tobermore country stone in bracken colour was used for the retaining wall with a land drain pipe fitted behind to catch any water coming down the slope.Tobermore Sandstone coloured Mayfair flags for the patio, with bracken setts and a central feature 3m Indian Sandstone camel dust inset on the patio. We also relaid the lawn with roll out turf to complete this beautiful terraced garden.

This garden in Duleek we redesigned and built had numerous problems. Very poor drainage due to the quality of the top soil and subsoil and with their two dogs was wet and mucky nearly all year round. Also the use of space was poor due to many features too close together, a deck, garden shed and patio and border plants. We paved the entire area with Oldbridge’s French limestone and Aztec sun central feature. Fitted a closed pipe to take hot tub outlet pipe and a linear drain in the patio to collect surface water when cleaning patio and a land drain and sump connected to storm drains to take ground water and drain garden. The results speak for themselves!.

Turvey allotments Donabate Co.Dublin Saturday Easter Bank holiday weekend between the sun and hail stones we successfully transported this glasshouse from mornington co.Meath to turvey allotments. A fabulous site i may add! Lots of work going on too when we arrived ladies rotavating, men moving & digging in nutritous farm manure to boost their potential harvest. Eggs for sale 12 for 3 euro!
